Home Buying Series – Part 3
Why the “Perfect” Home Doesn’t Exist
If there is one thing I’ve learned after helping buyers for nearly 40 years, it’s this:
Almost everyone starts their home search with a long list of “must-haves” and “wants.”
There’s nothing wrong with having a wish list. In fact, I encourage it. It helps us understand what is most important to you.
The challenge comes when buyers expect every home to check every box.
The truth is, no home is perfect—no matter what price range you’re shopping in.
Instead of looking for perfection, I encourage my buyers to look for potential.
Start With What You Can’t Change
When we walk through a home together, I always ask my buyers to think about the things they can never change.
Ask yourself questions like:
-
Do I like the location?
-
Am I comfortable with the size of the property?
-
How close are the neighboring homes?
-
Is there a busy road nearby?
-
Does the neighborhood fit my lifestyle?
-
Will my commute work for me?
These are the things you’ll live with every day, and they are difficult—or impossible—to change.
If those things feel right, then it’s time to look at the possibilities.
Now Look at What You Can Change
This is where many buyers miss a great opportunity.
It’s easy to walk into a home and focus on outdated flooring, old cabinets, or light fixtures. But those are some of the easiest things to update over time.
You might replace the flooring with something that better fits your style.
You could update the kitchen by replacing the cabinets—or give them a fresh new look with paint, new hardware, and updated hinges.
Changing light fixtures can instantly brighten a room and give it a more modern feel.
Even replacing plain interior doors with six-panel doors can make a surprising difference.
Outside, adding landscaping, planting flowers, or building a patio can completely transform the way you enjoy your home.
Little by little, a house begins to reflect your personality and your lifestyle.
A House Becomes a Home
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is watching buyers turn a house into a home.
The home they almost passed by because it needed a little updating often becomes the one they can’t imagine leaving.
Every improvement they make tells a part of their story.
That’s what makes a home special.
Not because it was perfect the day they bought it—but because they made it their own.
Marsha’s Tip
Don’t let cosmetic updates keep you from seeing a home’s potential.
Focus first on the things you can’t change. Then imagine all the things you can.
You may discover that the perfect home isn’t the one that’s already finished—it’s the one that gives you the opportunity to create the home you’ve always wanted.
